“He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed. He is the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. He is Allah , other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Perfection, the Bestower of Faith, the Overseer, the Exalted in Might, the Compeller, the Superior. Exalted is Allah above whatever they associate with Him. He is Allah , the Creator, the Inventor, the Fashioner; to Him belong the best names. Whatever is in the heavens and earth is exalting Him. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.” [Quran 59:22-24]
SCENE:
<King Hasan humming RM tune, walking around, coughs a bit. Jester presents a glass of water with a flourish to the King.>
Jester: How does a glass of water introduce itself?
King Hasan: No idea!
Jester: The name's Bond. Hydrogen Bond.
King Hasan: I think the professor might appreciate that joke! Nothing like a glass of pure cool water to quench the thirst! Alhumdulillah.
Aunty Hiba: You know this refreshing water reminds me that one of the beautiful names of Allah is Al Quddoos, which means The Absolutely Pure. Al Quddoos is from the root qaaf-daal-seen. The main meaning from the word Quds is to be pure and clean. Allah is the One Who is completely clean and pure. He doesn’t have any flaws or dirtiness.
As people, we get dirty in many ways. We will talk about some of those in a minute. But let's start with first things first. What's one thing us Muslims should say before we do anything?
Yes that's right, we should always start with Bismillah. But what if I told you...there is one thing we should do even before we say Bismillah. Can you think of what we can do even before we say Bismillah? We can make Niyyah or make good intentions. This means thinking in our heads and hearts that whatever we are about to do is for the sake of Allah. The very awesome thing about this is that we can make ANYTHING an act of worship and a way to earn blessings if we make the right niyyah.
SCENE:
Jester <juggling>: I intend to juggle and show my immense talent for the sake of Allah <drops everything>
I will make funny faces and spread happiness for the sake of Allah.
Aunty Hiba: Okay Jester. Guys when we make niyyah and we say Bismillah we make sure that all of our actions are pure. This is a way of worshipping Al Quddoos, the Absolutely Pure.
So we’ve taken a look at what we can do to keep our actions clean. What other things do we have to keep clean? Let's peek in and see what our friends are up to.
SCENE:
King Hasan: (counting gold coins and looking terribly pleased with himself.) 9997, 9998, 9999, 10000! Oh wow I’ve got 10000 gold coins! Think of all the toys, gadgets, cars and cool clothes I can buy! Think of the palaces and crowns and horses I can buy! I am rich! Rich! Riiiiccchhh!
Cat: <holds up sign> ‘Allah is Al Quddoos’
King Hasan: (momentarily stunned...then slowly) Allah is Al Quddoos. Allah is Al Quddoos. Allah is The Absolutely Pure.
Cat: <points to gold coins>
King Hasan: My gold coins? You think they need to be purified?
Cat: <nods>
King Hasan: <hesitating> Shall I wash them?
Cat: <laughs, shakes his head no, taps head to think>
King Hasan: Oh I remember now! The way to purify wealth is to give some of it away in charity! Well I certainly want my wealth to be pure. Lets see now, Zakah is 2.5% of wealth. And I have 10000 gold coins. Someone help! What’s 2.5% of 10000?!
Professor Hums: (2.5/100) x 10000=250
King Hasan: So from 10,000 gold coins I need to give away 250 gold coins! That's a really small price to pay for clean wealth blessed by Al Quddoos!
Aunty Hiba: Looks like King Hasan is on his way to making sure his wealth is pure by giving Zakah. I wonder what the good Professor Hums is doing?
SCENE:
Professor Hums: Flaming fiddlesticks! Meowing micro molecules!
This terrible, no good, very bad pen!
You useless apparatus! You jelly junk! You call yourself a writing instrument!
Balderdash! <tries pounding pen and tries scribbling furiously>
Cat: <wanders in>
Professor Hums: Scat you drat cat…! First the silly pen, now this drat cat! Oh I am having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.
Cat: <Holds up sign> ‘Allah is Al Quddoos’
Professor Hums: <slowly reading> Allah is Al Quddoos. Allah is Al Quddoos. Allah is The Absolutely Pure.
Professor Hums: <ahem> No doubt, no doubt.... But you drat cat!
Cat: <Waves ‘Allah is Al Quddoos’ sign, taps his mouth>
Professor Hums: You are telling me to purify my words?!
Cat: <thumbs up>
Professor Hums: I know how to do that!!! I can say Astaghfirullah. Astaghfirullah means “I seek forgiveness from Allah! I will say it 100 times with sincerity just like our beloved Prophet (s).” I’ll actually start right now <pulls out abacus>
Aunty Hiba: The brilliant Professor has come quite quickly to the right idea! Using pure, clean, good words is how Muslims speak! And asking for Allah’s forgiveness every time we do something wrong is the best idea. The faster you turn to Allah for forgiveness, the better it is for you. The doors of Allah’s mercy and forgiveness are always open, we just have to step forward and step through!
Aunty Hiba: Remember from the last video from when we studied the Name of Allah Al Malik?
The Prophet used to say immediately following the witr prayer: Subhaan al-Malik al-Quddoos (Glory is to the King, the Holy) three times, and raising and extending his voice on the third time and then saying: Rabbil-malaa’ikati warroohi (Lord of the angels and the spirit). <coughing>
Ok, I think I am losing my voice! My throat hurts. I’m heading to the doctor.
SCENE:
Dr. Fatima: Assalamu Alaikum! How are you? Is everything okay? You look a bit down.
Aunty Hiba: Well I seem to suddenly have a bit of a sore throat. Any ideas on what I should do to make it feel better...I have a lot of speaking to do in the next few days...
Dr. Fatima: <somewhat pompously> Well, well, you’ve done the right thing by coming straight to me. I always recommend that my patients take a bit of honey to soothe their throats. I find it a most effective remedy...
Aunty Hiba: Thanks for the reminder Doc! I love the taste of honey and it really does feel good when you have a sore throat! <leaves the room>
Dr. Fatima: Gosh I am such a smart doctor. I always give such a quick and accurate diagnosis of the patient. I just saw her and bam, naturally I prescribed just the right thing!
Honey has so many great properties. It heals wounds and burns, it prevents acidity and it fights infections. And research suggests that honey is as effective as over-the-counter cough medication. Just take one or two teaspoonfuls straight up and sunnah too!
But wow. How smart am I that I know all this. And people come to me for help. How important am I? I. Am. The. Best.
Cat: <holds up sign> ‘Allah is Al Quddoos’
Dr. Fatima: <slowly> Allah is Al Quddoos. Allah is Al Quddoos. Allah is The Absolutely Pure.
Dr. Fatima: What are you trying to tell me, cat? I am smart! I can figure this out!
Cat: <Waves ‘Allah is Al Quddoos’ sign, taps heart, bows head>
Dr. Fatima: Aah I get it. You are reminding me to purify my heart! I have been thinking too much of myself! I have been arrogant. I should be more humble. But how to purify the heart?
Cat: <gestures towards Quran>
Dr. Fatima: Heeeeyy! The Quran is a great way to purify your heart! Reading Quran regularly will help me be humble. I can do this! I will be the best Quran reader! I will be the most humble person ever!
Aunty Hiba: <laughing> I think the doctor is on the right path. Sometimes purifying ourselves of arrogance is the most difficult of the purifications. It's hard to look at ourselves and realize that we have flaws. But it's good to always try to better ourselves in the sight of Allah who is Al Quddoos.
Allah is Al Quddoos and He loves purity. First we talked about purity of intentions. Then King Hasan taught us about the purity of wealth. Professor Hums taught us about the purity of our speech and Dr Fatima taught us about the importance of purifying our hearts. There are so many other things we can try to purify. For example, one other really important one is making sure our bodies are pure and clean. To clean our bodies, we know to take baths and do wudu, brush our teeth, comb our hair, clip our fingernails, and of course, carefully wash our bottoms after we do our bathroom business.
SCENE:
King Hasan: <gasps>
Jester: <covers mouth>
Dr. Fatima: <covers ears>
Professor Hums: Hehehe she said ‘bottoms’ hehehe.
Aunty Hiba: Ok Ok I know this is funny! But it's seriously important too! Everyone has to do their bathroom business and as good Muslims who keep our bodies pure, we must make sure to wash our bottoms when we are done. It is what it is.
<Professor Hums still laughing over bottoms>
Well this has certainly been a day for cleaning and purifying.
Let’s revise our dua together:
Subhaan al-Malik al-Quddoos Rabbil-malaa’ikati warroohi
Aunty Hiba: I am so glad to learn Al Quddoos today. Allah is the Pure and thinking of this name we remember to keep our words, actions, wealth, thoughts and bodies pure. Alhumdulillah!
See if you can find the beautiful name of Allah Al Quddoos! Remember what Al Quddoos means? The Absolutely Pure!
