“He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed. He is the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. He is Allah , other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Perfection, the Bestower of Faith, the Overseer, the Exalted in Might, the Compeller, the Superior. Exalted is Allah above whatever they associate with Him. He is Allah , the Creator, the Inventor, the Fashioner; to Him belong the best names. Whatever is in the heavens and earth is exalting Him. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.” [Quran 59:22-24]

SCENE:

Professor Hums: So would you rather be as mighty as a King or as smart as me, your favorite Professor Hums?

Aunty Hiba: Two of the beautiful names of Allah are Al Azeez and Al Hakeem. Aziz comes from the root letters ain-zaa-zaa with meanings of being mighty and undefeated, Hakeem comes  from ha-kaaf-meem with meanings of being wise, able to pass sound judgement and prevent wrongdoing. So...Al Azeez means The Powerful and Al Hakeem which means The Most Wise.

Allah’s Name Al Azeez means He is the incomparable source of all strength and might, and His power cannot be overcome or resisted. He gives Izza which is honour, dignity, and strength, to whomever He wills.

One awesome example of this Izza from Allah is when Allah gave honour, dignity and strength to the Muslims in the Battle of Badr. By the way, did you know that the Battle of Badr was fought in Ramadan?! The Battle of Badr was one in which for all practical purposes it looked like the Muslims would definitely lose. I’m sure the Professor has done plenty of research in this regard.

SCENE:

Professor Hums: Of course I have. Ahem. In the battle of Badr, the Muslims were greatly outnumbered by the disbelievers.

  • The Muslim army was only 313 men while the disbelievers numbered around 1300 men. Thats more than four disbelievers against every one Muslim!
  • The Muslims had two horses and the disbelievers had a hundred horses.
  • The Muslims had 70 camels and the disbelievers had 700 camels.
  • The Muslims were very ill-equipped with just 6 coats of armour, while the opposing army was heavily armed, with 600 armed soldiers.

Aunty Hiba: Well the numbers certainly looked like they were in the disbelievers’s favor! But, Allah Al Azeez was on the side of the Muslims. When the Battle of Badr started, Allah sent thousands of angels from heaven to assist the Muslims in battle. Imagine thousands of angels fighting alongside the few hundred Muslims! Angel Jibraeel then instructed the Prophet (s) to take a handful of dust and throw it in their faces. So the Prophet (s) took a single handful of dust and threw it in the direction of their faces. This dust was transformed into a gigantic whirlwind that dispersed the enemy.

An army of spiritual soldiers and a supernatural dust storm. Amazing show of strength from the Almighty, The Powerful, Al Azeez. The Battle of Badr was a victory! After winning the Battle, Allah reminded the believers that it was through His Might (and Wisdom) that they were victorious.

SCENE:

Jester: What is a soldier’s favorite month? March!

“And Allah made it not except as [a sign of] good tidings for you and to reassure your hearts thereby. And victory is not except from Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Wise”

[Quran 3:126]

Aunty Hiba: Did you all hear the Names of Allah Al Azeez Al Hakeem at the end of the ayah that we just heard where Allah is reminding the Muslims that they won only with His help.

SCENE:
Jester:
Knock knock
King Hasan: Who’s there
Jester: Dishes
King Hasan: Dishes who
Jester: Dishes a nice place you’ve got over here.
King Hasan: What brings you by, Jester?

Jester: I had a question...What is wisdom anyways?

King Hasan: To never argue with fools.

Jester: I totally disagree.

King Hasan: Yes, you are right.

Aunty Hiba: Ah, wisdom! Such a tricky thing. So hard to define. We want it so badly. But it’s not easy to come by. Allah speaks about wisdom in the Quran:

“He bestows wisdom upon anyone He wills, and he who is given wisdom is in fact given great wealth, but only those who have common sense learn lessons from these things.” [Quran 2:269]

Yes! The Quran says that wisdom is in fact a great and amazing favor from Allah. And those who have it are called ulul albaab, or people of intellect. That sounds something pretty cool to be don’t you think? Everyone’s out there trying to be a celebrity or an influencer or an athlete...and we Muslims, what do we want to be? Persons of intellect! Carriers of wisdom!

But what is wisdom anyways?

Wisdom is the ability to think and act using knowledge, experience, understanding, common sense and insight. Basically, wisdom is thinking and acting in a very very sound manner. In Arabic, wisdom is called hikmah.

Allah’s Name Al Hakeem means that He is perfectly wise. There is no mistake in His decisions or in His judgement. His every action is faultless and perfect.

Aunty Hiba: Al Azeez Al Hakeem. These two Names have come together 47 times in the Quran. But why?

Remember when we studied Ar Rahmaan and Ar Raheem together? Those two Names have similar meanings so we understand why they are mentioned together so often. Also, Al Khaaliq Al Baari and Al Musawwir are quite similar in their meaning so it made sense for us to study them together to try and understand the subtle differences between them. But what about Al Azeez and Al Hakeem? One of the Names refers to great power or strength and the other refers to great wisdom. So why did Allah choose to put them together so often? Lets see what our friends are up to...it might help us understand why strength and wisdom go so well together.

SCENE:

King Hasan: Ugh the smell coming from the landfill is disgusting! And it looks so ugly too! This problem needs to go away. I am going to use all the power I have at my disposal to fix this problem.

Professor Hums: Ugh the smell coming from the landfill is disgusting! And it looks so ugly too! This problem needs to go away. I am going to use all my brains to fix this problem.

Dr. Fatima: Ugh the smell coming from the landfill is disgusting! And it looks so ugly too! This problem needs to go away. Do you know what a landfill is? When you throw out the trash, it probably goes away on a truck.

Jester: Oooh what has 6 wheels and flies? A garbage truck! Hyuk!

Dr Fatima: The truck probably takes that garbage to a landfill. A landfill is a large hole in the ground outside town where we put the garbage. We put garbage in landfills because it's smelly and ugly. Imagine if you just threw your garbage out into the street: gross, right?

King Hasan: Ok my strong hard workers! Time to get to work! Put all your strength and power into the job! This landfill is full of garbage now. You have to cover the old landfill with dirt and dig up a whole new landfill. This is going to be work for only the strongest workers!

But...the new landfill will also be ugly and smelly. The problem will only be temporarily sorted. Even with the power of all these workers I am unable to come up with a solution!

Professor Hums: Ok my active, smart brain cells! Time to get to work! Put all your reasoning and analysis into the job! This landfill is full of garbage now. It's ugly and smelly. There are so many problems with landfills. They are bad for the environment. They are bad for animals. I need to think of a new solution that doesn’t cause all these problems.

<lightbulb moment> What we need is a recycling system and a composting system so that garbage can be effectively eliminated from the system!

But...how can I start a recycling and composting system for the whole town? I am just one man. Even with my good idea I am unable to implement a solution!

<sigh and sit together>

Jester: Knock knock
King Hassan/Professor Hums: Who’s there
Jester: Egg
King Hassan/Professor Hums: Egg who
Jester: Eggstremely disappointed in both of you.

SCENE:

Dr. Fatima: Well, we can clearly see what needs to be done right friends? The town needs a combination of the strength of King Hasan and the wisdom of Professor Hums in order for the new recycling and composting system to be made and used. And so it will be! I’m going to talk to both of them so that they can join forces to make this happen!

Aunty Hiba: And so it is with all of creation. We all need Al Azeez The Powerful, and Al Hakeem The Most Wise together for things to be perfect. Our scholars have taught us that Allah does the proper thing in the proper way in the proper place and the proper time.

Another very important reason to have Al Azeez and Al Hakeem together becomes apparent when we consider this: How many people have power but misuse it? There are so many examples of cruel tyrants, unjust bosses, unfair leaders. They are misusing their power because of their lack of wisdom. On the other hand, Allah Al Azeez uses His power with perfect wisdom because He is Al Hakeem. There is no such thing as Allah misusing His Power! So Al Azeez and Al Hakeem are such a powerful and wise combination.

SCENE

King Hasan: Having faith in Al Azeez gives you courage and peace because you know your Lord is unbeatable. I pray He gives me power to care for the kingdom well!

Professor Hums: Having faith in Al Hakeem gives you courage and peace because you know your Lord makes the best decisions. I pray He gives me the wisdom to come up with good ideas for the well being of our kingdom!

Aunty Hiba: King Hasan and Professor Hums doing things to take care of their town has reminded me of another super important point!

Jester: That I am a stunning example of both strength and wisdom?

Aunty Hiba: Umm...something like that. Allah has blessed human beings with Izza and Hikmah like no other creation. He refers to us humans as Ahsan Al Makhlooqaat. That means you, yes you! Are amongst the best of creation.

You have the power and the thinking capability to do things. You have the power and thinking capability to make decisions. You have the power and thinking capability to change the world.

And as we learned, with great power comes great responsibility! Allah refers to humans as His vice regents or His Khaleefas on this earth. This means that we MUST use our power and our thinking in the BEST way possible. We must be people who make wise decisions and do good deeds. We must take care of other people, the environment, and animals. We must use our minds and bodies to the best extent of our abilities.

SCENE:
Jester: What's up doc?

Dr. Fatima: Oh I am just refilling my bottle of black seeds

Jester: Oh are you going into gardening?

Dr. Fatima: No, this is for my patients. Did you know hakeemi medicine is derived from the sunnah of the Prophet? The Prophet has said black seeds contain the cure for every ailment. I recommend to all my patients that it's hikmah to eat some black seeds every day.

Jester: Can I get some? I could use some hikmah, I mean black seeds. <takes the whole bottle>

Aunty Hiba: As servants of Al Aziz, remember that it is Allah who gives strength, and as servants of Al Hakim remember it should always be  accompanied by wisdom and mercy, not arrogance or harshness.

If you follow Allah’s book the Quran, and follow the Prophet’s Sunnah, you can also be mighty and wise.

I am so glad to learn about Al Aziz and Al Hakeem today. Allah is the Mighty and the Wise. I hope I can be wise in all my thoughts and actions don't you? Let's keep these beautiful Names in our hearts and minds so we always trust Allah’s plan for our life. Everything will happen in the right way. We don’t need to worry. We just need to keep doing the next right thing. InshaAllah.

Let’s watch Surah Hashr ayahs again. This time see if you can find the beautiful Names of Allah Al Aziz Al Hakim!
